Stream on Demand: ‘Bridge of Spies,’ ‘Suffragette’ offer history lessons
What’s new for home viewing on video-on-demand and Netflix, Amazon Prime and other streaming services.

“Bridge of Spies,” Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama starring Tom Hanks as the civilian lawyer negotiating a prisoner swap with the Soviets in 1962, is nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture. PG-13. Also on iTunes, Amazon Video, DVD and Blu-ray.
Politics also drive “Suffragette,” with Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter fighting for women’s voting rights in early 20th-century Britain (PG-13); “Truth” with Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford as TV journalists in the “60 Minutes” scandal (R); and the election satire “Our Brand is Crisis” with Sandra Bullock and Billy Bob Thornton (R).
Also new: the British period piece “Effie Gray” with Dakota Fanning and Emma Thompson (PG-13), the animated “Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet” (PG) and the Sundance drama “Difret” from Ethiopia (no rating).
Netflix
“Better Call Saul: Season 1,” the “Breaking Bad” prequel, stars Bob Odenkirk as the man who will become the amoral Saul Goodman. It arrives two weeks before the second season launches on AMC.
More new TV: “The Lizzie Borden Chronicles: Season 1” with Christina Ricci and “Mad Men: Season 7: Part 2” with the final episodes of the Emmy-winning cable series.
“Experimenter” (2015) stars Peter Sarsgaard as Stanley Milgram, the social psychologist whose experiments in human behavior rocked America. PG-13.
Adam McKay, the Oscar-nominated director of “The Big Short,” directs the Will Ferrell comedy hit “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” (2006). It’s also on Amazon Prime Video. PG-13.
Amazon Prime Video
“Amy,” a portrait of British soul singer Amy Winehouse featuring rare home movies and performance footage, is one of this year’s Oscar-nominated documentaries. R.
Spike Lee’s polarizing “Chi-Raq” (2015), the first original feature produced by Amazon Studios, is now streaming free for Amazon Prime subscribers. R.
The BBC romantic drama “Poldark: Season 1” (2015) stars Aidan Turner as a British soldier rebuilding his life in 18th-century Cornwall.
Hulu
“Grease: Live,” which premiered earlier this week on Fox, is now available to watch not-so-live on Hulu.
More new TV: “UnREAL: Season 1,” the whipsmart satire of reality TV made for Lifetime, and the Comedy Central series “Idiotsitter: Season 1.”
HBO Now
“True Story” (2015) stars Jonah Hill as a disgraced journalist and James Franco as a convicted killer who took his identity. R.
Also new: the low-fi sci-fi indie “I Origins” (2014) (R) and the debut of “Animals.,” an animated comedy for adults.
Showtime Anytime
“Molly Moon and the Incredible Book of Hypnotism” (2015) brings the best-selling kids book to the screen. PG.
