Area roundup: WSU’s Brooks-Johnson wins pentathlon at Cougar Indoor

Washington State junior Alissa Brooks-Johnson won the pentathlon to lead the WSU women at the Cougar Indoor track and field Friday in Pullman.

Brooks-Johnson finished with 4,101 points, a career best and third-best in school history. The mark ranks 12th nationally. WSU’s Liz Harper was second with 3,920 points.

The Cougars’ Dino Dodig is in first place after the first day of competition in the men’s heptathlon.

Idaho’s Travis Pickett won the men’s 35-pound weight throw, reaching a distance of 57 feet, 9 inches. Action continues Saturday.

Baseball

Ryan Kingma pitched seven strong innings, Jacob Yamane finished a home run short of the cycle and Whitworth defeated Cal Lutheran 8-2 in a nonconference season-opener at Ullman Stadium in Thousand Oaks, California.

Kingma pitched seven innings and gave up three hits, no walks and one unearned run. Yamane had four hits, scored three times and drove in a run.

The Pirates begin a three-game set against Whittier on Saturday in Whittier, California.
