Women’s basketball: Cooks’ 3-point play lifts Washington State over Arizona
Mariah Cooks’ 3-point play with 3.4 seconds left lifted Washington State over Arizona 62-61 in Tucson, Arizona, on Sunday, halting a nine-game losing streak.
The Cougars (13-14, 4-12 Pac 12) trailed by two with 5.5 seconds left when Nike McClure was fouled off the ball and put on the line. She missed both, but Cooks grabbed the rebound of the second, made the put-back shot and was fouled. Cooks made the free throw and Arizona’s last-ditch, half-court shot missed.
Borislava Hristova led the Cougars with 16 points, and Cooks finished with 12.
Arizona (11-17, 2-14 Pac 12), which lost its 10th in a row, was led by Malena Washington with 14 points.
A pair of free throws by Cooks pulled WSU even at 56 with 3:13 to play, but Arizona got a big 3-pointer from LaBrittney Jones to go up five with 1:47 left. The Cougars clawed back at the line, hitting 4 of 9 attempts in the last 1:14.
(9) Arizona State 77, Washington 57: Quinn Dornstauder scored a career-high 25 points and the Sun Devils raced away from the Huskies in the second half at Tempe, Arizona.
After a shaky start, Arizona State (24-4, 15-1 Pac-12) blew open a close game with a huge third quarter run and harassed Kelsey Plum after she scored 11 points in the opening 10 minutes.
Katie Hempen, Sophie Brunner and Elisha Davis each scored 11 points for the Sun Devils, who shot 50 percent to win their sixth straight game.
Plum, the nation’s second-leading scorer, had 25 points on 7-of-21 shooting and Talia Walton added 13.
Washington (18-9, 9-7) had 19 turnovers that led to 24 points in its fifth loss in eight games.
