Man dies in hospital after Seattle police shooting

Associated Press

SEATTLE – An armed man shot by police on Sunday has died in the hospital. Seattle police says two officers were investigating a suspicious car in north Seattle around 3:30 p.m. when they encountered a man armed with a handgun.

When an officer approached his vehicle to take 46-year-old Che Taylor into custody, authorities say he did not obey their commands to show his hands and get on the ground. Instead, officers and a civilian witness say he reached for his handgun and officers fired on him.

Taylor was taken to Harborview Medical Center. Police say he was carrying crack cocaine and black tar heroin.

Officers booked one of the other people in the vehicle into the King County Jail for possession of suspected heroin.

Police say Taylor was a violent felon legally prohibited from possessing a handgun. His criminal history includes convictions for assault, robbery and rape.

The two officers involved in the shooting are on paid leave. Authorities are still investigating.
