EDINBURG, Texas – Johnny Gonzalez (1-1) scattered eight hits over 8 1/3 innings and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth inning Thursday to defeat Washington State 3-1 in nonconference baseball.

Andrew Padron earned his first save by striking out Cameron Frost with two outs and the bases loaded.

Joseph Collazo’s two-out, two-run single to right field capped a three-run second for the Vaqueros (1-4) off WSU starter Ian Hamilton (0-2).

Patrick McGrath’s RBI infield single in the third allowed the Cougars (1-4) to trim the deficit to 3-1.

Cougars leadoff hitter Trek Stemp finished 4 for 5 with one run.
