Area schools fare well in state high school bowling
Area schools had three all-state selections and nine top-five singles finishers when the Washington State Bowling Proprietors Association High School Varsity State Bowling Championships wound up Sunday at Big Al’s in Vancouver.
And Cheney, which saw its David Worthey selected to the Boys Division 2 All-State second team with a 174 average, was voted the Most Inspirational team by its peers.
Mt. Spokane, which has bowlers from five schools competing under its banner, landed senior and team captain Clint Norlen, who attends Riverside, on the Boys Division 1 All-State first team with a 208 average, and junior Mason Georgeadis, who attends Mt. Spokane, on the Boys Division 1 second team with a 204 average.
All-state selections are based on performances during the team portion of the tournament on Saturday. Top-five placings are determined by singles qualifying on Saturday and Sunday followed by step-ladder, match-play finals involving the top five qualifiers in each of four divisions.
Area bowlers swept Girls Division 2 with Alexis Griego of Rogers placing first followed by Maddy Garza, Moses Lake; Mackenzie Broadsword, Rogers; Jessica Kittilstred, Shadle Park; and Haley Nava, West Valley. Also with top-10 finishes were Alyssa Rodriguez, Rogers; Hayley Casdinale, Uniq Metcalf and Aliyah Forsyth, all Shadle Park; and Samantha Glisson and Rachel Schnecht, both Rogers.
In Girls Division 1, Kimberly Mulder, Moses Lake, placed third and Dinah Eve Seymour, Post Falls, fourth. Danielle Garcia, Moses Lake, had a top-10 finish.
Parker Portalski of East Valley won Boys Division 1 with teammate Anthony Huck placing fifth. There were no area bowlers in the Boys Division 2 finals, but Brian Applonie of Rogers and Izak King and Malik Cheek of North Central placed just outside the top five.
Moses Lake won the Division 1 team event with Mt. Spokane sixth and Shadle Park 11th. In Division 2, Rogers was sixth, the Shadle Park girls seventh and Cheney 12th.
College scene
Mark Seely from Central Valley and J.T. Konrad from Mead earned All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field honors for second-place finishes for Western Washington in the conference’s indoor championships last weekend in Nampa, Idaho.
Seely, a senior, set a school record of 47 feet, 2½ inches in the triple jump. Konrad, a sophomore, cleared 15-6¼ for an NCAA Division II provisional mark in the pole vault.
• Aleisha Hathaway, a Western Washington junior from Shadle Park, repeated on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic team in women’s basketball with a 3.56 grade-point average in psychology and biology.
High school scene
Area schools dominated the girls basketball category, capturing titles in five of the six classifications, as the WIAA, Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires recognized team academic state champions for the winter sports season.
Central Valley, with a 3.902 grade-point average, is the state champion in 4A, with Clarkston, 2A, 3.820; Newport, 1A, 3.868; Wilbur-Creston, 2B, 3.875; and Oakesdale, 1B, 3.901, also capturing titles.
Other area schools earning state honors were Colton, 1B boys basketball, 3.785 GPA; Liberty, 2B boys wrestling, 3.565; and Mary Walker of Springdale, 2B girls wrestling, 3.328.
Shooting
Cassidy Wilson of the Spokane Junior Rifle Club captured a gold medal and a berth in the National Junior Olympics during the Washington State Junior Olympic Rifle Championships.
Wilson, 15, who is home schooled, won the gold medal in the women’s J2 category for 15-17-year-olds by shooting 560 out of a possible 600. The national championships will be at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in April.
David Wright, 17, Riverpoint Academy, placed third in men’s J1 (18 and older), shooting a 563 to receive a second-round invitation to nationals.

Men – Mason Maystrovich, 14, Northwest Christian, J2, 10th overall, 4th Expert Class; Cameron Berreth, 16, Oaks Academy, J2, 2nd A Class.
Team – SJRC Gold (Wilson; Wright; Hillman; Aidan Maddox, 16, Riverpoint Academy), 3rd; SJRC Silver (McAdams; Maystrovich; Maystrovich; Mike Cooper, 17, Mt. Spokane), 5th.
