Socialism distorted

The Feb. 14 Lisa Benson political cartoon was deceptive propaganda at its worst. It assumes that any political word that ends with “ism,” like socialism, is bad, and must be seen as a cross is to a vampire. Hold up a cartoon with “socialism” in it and most Spokesman-Review readers cower in fear.

The cartoon showed an ice cream truck giving free stuff to people running after it. I don’t recall any free ice cream when I was a child, or later as a parent. Socialism has citizens paying for the goodies they get from the government. The handouts aren’t free.

Benson drew a communist symbol and wrote “socialism” under it. She implies that communism and socialism are one and the same. There isn’t any free stuff in Communist North Korea, and any opposition gets eliminated.

Medicare Part D is free stuff that came from our Republican Congress and President George W. Bush. It’s too bad that seniors can’t keep up with that free ice cream truck that gives billions to the drug companies.

How about printing a cartoon showing that sleazy drug company CEO in his BMW running down seniors chasing Republican free stuff?
