Shadle Park graduate and former Spokane Chief Derek Ryan was among three players promoted from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League to the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes on Monday.

This marks the first NHL call-up for Ryan, 29, who leads the Checkers in goals (17) and points (42) this season, in 55 games played. Ryan totaled 15 goals and 45 assists (60 points) in 55 games for Orebro of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) in 2014-15, earning Forward of the Year and Most Valuable Player honors in the SHL.

Ryan played parts of four seasons with the Chiefs, the final two of which were under current Hurricanes coach Bill Peters.
