Big Sky men’s basketball: Montana State tops Northern Arizona in overtime

Montana State 73, Northern Arizona 72: Tyler Hall scored five of his 16 points in overtime to help the Bobcats (6-8, 1-1) rally for a victory over the Lumberjacks (7-6, 0-2) in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Hall tied it at 60 with a 3-pointer to force the overtime, then put the Bobcats up 67-64 with a jumper with 1:17 left in OT.

Hall’s 3 with 48 seconds to go gave Montana State a 72-68 lead, and his free throw put the Bobcats up 73-69. NAU’s Felix Rivera-Vega hit a 3 to pull within 73-72 with 10 seconds left.

MSU’s Sarp Gobeloglu made a one of two free throws to make it 74-72 before NAU’s Torry Johnson missed a 3 at the buzzer.

Marcus Colbert scored 23 points and Zach Green had 10 with 12 rebounds for the Bobcats.

Kris Yanku scored 19, Rivera-Vega added 15 and Marcus DeBerry and Mike Green each had 13 for NAU.

Montana 83, Southern Utah 66: Martin Breunig scored 24 points and Brandon Gfeller added 21 as the Grizzlies (7-6, 2-0) soundly beat the Thunderbirds (3-9, 1-1) 83-66 in Cedar City, Utah.

The two players shot a combined 16 for 23 (69.5 percent) from the field. Gfeller shot 6 for 11 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Montana shot out of the gate when Breunig made three of the Grizzlies’ first four shots and led 9-3. But Southern Utah fought back and took a 22-20 lead on a pair of Casey Oliverson free throws with 8:37 to play before halftime.

Gfeller made back-to-back 3s and Michael Oguine’s layup with 5:51 before the break gave Montana the lead for good. The Grizzlies led 40-28 at half.

Montana extended the lead to 52-35 on two baskets and four free throws by Breunig, and layups by Walter Wright and Oguine.

James McGee led Southern Utah with 13 points and Travon Langston and Trey Kennedy each had 12.

Weber State 77, Idaho State 56: Joel Bolomboy posted a double-double, scoring 25 points with 13 rebounds, as the Wildcats (9-5, 1-0) notched their fourth-straight win, beating the Bengals (5-8, 0-1) 77-56 in Ogden, Utah.

Bolomboy was 9 of 12 from the field and 7 of 9 from the line for the Wildcats. Zach Braxton and Kyndahl Hill scored 11 points apiece. The team averaged 44.8 percent shooting from the field and 69 percent from the line.

Weber State took the lead in the first minute of the game and never relinquished it, climbing to a 44-28 advantage at the break.

Idaho State got as close as trailing by 11 points, 60-49, with 10:09 left in the second half but hit just two buckets after that. The Wildcats continued to score and Bolomboy dunked to extend their lead to 75-52 with 1:47 left.

Ethan Telfair scored 15 points with six rebounds for the Bengals.

Portland State 76, Sacramento State 68: Bryce White scored 19 points, Calaen Robinson added 17 more and the Vikings (5-7, 1-0) hung on for a 76-68 win over the Hornets (7-5, 0-1) in the conference opener for both teams in Portland.

Eight of White’s points came in the final 1:13 of the game, including 6-of-6 shooting from the line.

Cameron Forte added 14 points and nine rebounds and Isaiah Pineiro had 11 points for Portland State, which forced 16 turnovers to get its first win over the Hornets since 2014.

Trailing 33-25 at the break, Sacramento State tightened the gap with an 8-3 burst to open the second half. Trevis Jackson’s bucket with 6:21 left tied it at 51 before Portland State retook control down the stretch.

Justin Strings led Sacramento State with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Eric Stuteville had 17 points and 12 boards, Dreon Barlett scored 13 and Marcus Graves 12.
