Colfax grad Brandon Gfeller named Big Sky player of week

University of Montana junior Brandon Gfeller has been named the Big Sky Conference men’s basketball player of the week after leading the Grizzlies to a 2-0 start in conference play.

Gfeller, a native of Colfax, led the Grizzlies to two road wins in the opening weekend of Big Sky Conference action. He averaged 22.5 points on 57 percent shooting on the week. The guard had a stellar performance from 3-point territory, shooting 58 percent from deep.

In Thursday’s 90-84 overtime win at Northern Arizona, Gfeller was the leading scorer with 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor. All eight of the junior’s field goals were from beyond the arc with only one two-point field goal attempt on the night. He was just one 3-pointer shy of setting the new school record for most 3-point makes in a game by an individual. The Grizzlies did set a new team record for most 3-pointers in a game as a team with 18. The previous record was 16, set against Portland State in 2002.

He continued his hot shooting streak at Southern Utah on Saturday where he posted 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. In the 83-66 win at SUU, Gfeller went 6-of-11 from behind the arc.
