Mathews, Cal stun No. 12 Arizona

Gabe York dribbled off his foot, then drove to the basket and missed a contested shot in the waning seconds, and California held on behind Jordan Mathews to beat No. 12 Arizona 74-73 on Saturday night in Berkeley, California.

Mathews converted an off-balance layin under pressure with 1:13 to play and finished with a season-best 28 points.

Cal (14-6, 4-3 Pac-12) improved to 13-0 at Haas Pavilion, where students in the sellout crowd of 11,858 rushed the court after the final buzzer.

York’s 3-pointer with 54.6 seconds left pulled Arizona (16-4, 4-3) within two. Kadeem Allen’s layup the next time down tied it at 73 with 39.3 seconds to play.

Jaylen Brown made the second of two free throws with 18.4 seconds left for Cal to give Arizona one last chance to win it. But the Wildcats failed to earn Sean Miller his 300th career victory in his first try.

Mathews knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers from nearly the same baseline spot early in the second half as Cal built a 51-42 lead.

Mathews had six 3s to move into fifth on the school’s career list with 168.

Brown finished with 15 points, seven assists and two powerful blocks.

Stanford 75, Arizona State 73: Rosco Allen had 24 points and scored the winning basket with 3.2 seconds remaining to lift the Cardinal (11-7, 4-3) past the Sun Devils (11-9, 1-6).

Marcus Allen added 13 points as the Cardinal (11-7, 4-3 Pac-12) beat the Sun Devils a fifth straight time at home.

Tra Holder scored 18 points for the Sun Devils (11-9, 1-6). Willie Atwood added 16 points and Obinna Oleka and Savon Goodman each added 11.

The Cardinal led most of the way, but Arizona State kept it close and took its first lead on Holder’s layup with 1:38 remaining to play.

The teams traded baskets and Dorian Pickens hit 1 of 2 foul shots to tie the game at 73 with 35.8 seconds to go.

Oregon 86, UCLA 72: Dillon Brooks scored 25 points and Chris Boucher had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Ducks (16-4, 5-2) to a win over the Bruins (12-8, 3-4) in Eugene, Oregon.

Elgin Cook added 17 points and six assists for Oregon, who won their 20th consecutive home game. Boucher led Oregon to a 42-32 rebounding advantage, including an 18-13 edge on the offensive glass.

Freshman Aaron Holiday led UCLA with a season-high 19 points. Thomas Welch had 16 points and eight rebounds.

Bryce Alford, the Pac-12’s fourth-leading scorer at 17.1 points, was held to 10 after shooting 3 of 13 from the field.

Oregon outscored UCLA 23-14 over the final 8 1/2 minutes after the Bruins had pulled within five at 63-58 with two Ducks on the bench with four fouls each.
