Spokane Indians fall to Vancouver Canadians for third straight loss

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Javier Hernandez’s two-out single in the ninth gave the Vancouver Canadians a 2-1 Northwest League victory over Spokane on Saturday night, the Indians’ third straight loss.

J.B. Woodman singled to lead off the ninth. He advanced to second on a ground out. One out later, Hernandez came through against Johan Juan (0-2).

The Indians (5-11) outhit Vancouver 12-7 with Xavier Turner picking up three hits but they left 10 runners on base.

The Indians had runners on first and second in the eighth before a double play ended the inning, and then runners on second and third with two outs in the ninth before coming up empty.

The Indians struck first in the third inning, sparked by Turner’s leadoff double, his first double this season. Darius Day followed with a soft fly ball to center to bring in Turner but Day was thrown out at second by catcher Hernandez after Day tried to advance on the throw home. That out was costly as the Indians put runners on first and second on singles by Elio Castillo and Blaine Prescott but were unable to bring them home.

The Canadians (9-7) replied in the bottom of the third with their first run. Hernandez led off with a double and went to third on a fielding error that put runners on the corners. A force out at second scored Hernandez.

The Indians missed a big chance to break the tie in the fourth when Carlos Garay, Turner and Day all singled with two outs only to have Garay thrown out at the plate by Woodman on Day’s hit.
