In Brief: Rondo headed to Bulls with two-year deal
NBA: A person with knowledge of the negotiations told the Associated Press that Rajon Rondo is going to the Chicago Bulls, agreeing on a $30 million, two-year deal.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because no deal can be signed until the league’s offseason moratorium ends on Thursday.
Rondo essentially becomes the Bulls’ replacement at point guard for Derrick Rose, the former NBA MVP who was traded to the New York Knicks last month.
Chicago becomes Rondo’s fourth team in less than two years. He spent his first eight full NBA seasons in Boston, winning a championship with the Celtics in 2008. The Celtics traded him to Dallas in December 2014, and Rondo spent last season in Sacramento.
Timberwolves get Aldrich: Minnesota agreed to a 3-year, $22 million contract with Cole Aldrich.
Temple to Kings: Guard Garrett Temple has reportedly accepted a $24 million, 3-year offer from Sacramento.
Hawks get Euro standout: Guard Malcolm Delaney, a Euroleague star out of Virginia Tech, has reportedly agreed to a $1.49 million, two-year contract offer from Atlanta.
Loyola parts ways with Sheryl Swoopes
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Loyola University’s investigation player allegiations against its women’s basketball coach has ended.
“Sheryl Swoopes is no longer serving as the women’s basketball coach at Loyola University Chicago,” athletic director Steve Watson said in the statement. “A search for her replacement will begin immediately. Loyola thanks Sheryl for her service to the women’s basketball program.”
Swoopes has been at the private Chicago university for three seasons with a record of 31-62.
Russia files appeal against doping ban
MISCELLANY: Russia has appealed a ban of its track and field team from next month’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro over doping.
Russian Olympic Committee spokesman Konstantin Vybornov confirmed that the appeal had been filed with the Court of Arbitration for Sport and would be heard July 19.
If Russia wins, the Olympic application deadline “will be extended” to let Russian athletes apply, the ROC’s legal department head, Alexandra Brilliantova, told the Tass news agency.
Suspension lifted: Olympic 1,500-meter gold medalist Asli Cakir Alptekin of Turkey has been cleared to race again as she appeals an eight-year doping suspension.
Cuban athletes detained: Finnish police say that eight members of Cuba’s national men’s volleyball team are in custody on suspicion of aggravated rape.
The Cuban team was playing in a volleyball tournament in Tampere where they lost 3-1 against Finland on Saturday without three of their players.
Panthers sign forward: The Florida Panthers have finalized the signing of forward Vincent Trocheck to a six-year, $28.5 million contract.
Ducks keep Guenin: Nate Guenin has agreed to a one-year, $600,000 contract to return to the Anaheim Ducks.
