DSHS: Stolen state laptop not a security breach

From staff reports

A laptop stolen during a weekend break-in at a Department of Social and Health Services office in Spokane is not considered a security breach, an agency spokesman said Tuesday.

The laptop was encrypted and did not contain confidential information for the Home and Community Services office, spokesman Chris West said. The office serves elderly or disabled residents and Medicaid clients who need help with in-home care.

An intruder reportedly gained entrance by breaking a window to the office at Rock Pointe III then cut the lock that was holding the laptop to a docking station. Nothing else was taken. It was the third break-in in the office complex in about a month, West said.
