The Kansas City Royals have placed closer Wade Davis on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right forearm.

Kansas City called up right-hander Brooks Pounders from Triple-A Omaha.

Davis is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA and 19 saves in 30 games. He is the third Royals All-Star from 2015 on the disabled list, joining third baseman Mike Moustakas (right knee) and outfielder Lorenzo Cain (left hamstring).

Pounders was 4-1 with a 2.80 ERA in 19 games at Omaha. To make room for Pounders on the roster, Kansas City designated minor league left-hander Tyler Olson for assignment.

Manager Ned Yost said right-hander Yordano Ventura, who left Sunday’s start in the third inning after he sprained his right ankle running the bases, will throw a side session Wednesday. Ventura remains on track to start Friday against Seattle.

Kang investigated for assault

Chicago police said they are investigating an allegation of sexual assault against Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang.

In a statement, police said a 23-year-old female reported being assaulted by Kang inside a hotel. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the Chicago woman met Kang through a dating app. Kang invited the woman to his hotel room on June 17, after the Pirates played the Cubs.

The woman said she blacked out, then drifted in and out of consciousness as he sexually assaulted her. The woman’s name has not been released.

The 29-year-old Kang has not been charged. He was not in the lineup Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Pirates team president Frank Coonelly said in a statement the team was taking the allegation “extremely seriously” and was cooperating with Major League Baseball. Coonelly declined further comment.

Kang, who is from South Korea, was batting .250 with 11 homers and 28 RBIs is in the second year of a four-year, $11 million contract. He was third in NL rookie of the year balloting last year.

Adds that Pirates had played the Cubs on June 17.

Maddon ejected from game

Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon has been ejected from Tuesday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.

The ejection was the second this season for Maddon, who got tossed with David Ross batting in the second inning. The veteran started heading toward first after taking a 3-0 pitch that he thought was ball four, only to have it called a strike by plate umpire Jerry Meals. Maddon got tossed by Meals as he protested from the dugout, then came out for a spirited argument that lasted a few more minutes. The Cubs were trailing 4-0.
