Education Notebook: Rogers’ 1976 class reunion collecting donations through Treasure Chest Fund

The Rogers High School class of 1976 is celebrating its 40th reunion by giving back through the Treasure Chest Fund.

On Saturday, the class will accept donations of canned food at Spike’s, 718 E. Francis Ave., beginning at 4:30 p.m. On Sunday, donations in the form of cash, check or gift cards to local stores will be accepted at a potluck picnic at Sontag Park from noon to 3 p.m.

Those not attending the reunion can send donations to the Treasure Chest Fund in care of Barb Silvey, Rogers High School, 1622 E. Wellesley Ave., Spokane, WA 99207.

Blackhawk scramble set for Sunday

Cheney High School’s Blackhawk Scramble golf event, which benefits the school’s athletics program and Kiwanis Club scholarships, will take place Sunday.

The day begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. A $75 entry fee includes golf, a cart, door prizes and a meal.

There will be a 50/50 putting contest, a long drive contest and a closest to the pin contest, as well as prizes, an auction and dinner following the round.

Students compete at business conference

Future Business Leaders of America students from Central Valley, East Valley and Freeman high schools recently competed at the 2016 FBLA Leadership Conference in Atlanta, with many placing high in their respective areas of competition.

Representing Central Valley, sophomores Javion Joyner and Angela Hoene reached the top 15 in entrepreneurship; and seniors Collin Dunn, Caleb Johnson, Morgan Clark and Mariah Reneau were national qualifiers in parliamentary procedure. Freshman Nathan Johnson competed in introduction to business, and freshman Gavin Ostheimer competed in introduction to business procedures.

The Central Valley officer team, Joyner, Amanda Lance, Hoene and Ostheimer, was the only Washington school represented at the 2016 National FBLA Institute for Leaders.

Representing East Valley, senior Baylee Buchanan and junior Laurel Weberg competed in partnership with business; and seniors Matt Montoya and Joe Grassl placed third in network design.

Representing Freeman, senior Kayla Figler competed in health care administration; sophomore Erick Flack competed in cyber security; Nathan Longhurst competed in introduction to financial math; sophomore Marley Pratt competed in client service; and sophomore Shilo Stuart competed in public speaking 1.

Credit union names scholarship winners

Numerica Credit Union has announced the winners of its 2016 Student Ambassador Scholarship, which recognizes students’ community service work.

CaraLee Howe, a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, Lillie Marsh, a graduate of Liberty High School, Talen Schoening, a graduate of Cashmere High School, Mallery Sisson, a graduate of Coeur d’Alene High School, and Paul Yount, a graduate of East Valley High School, each received $1,500.

Applicants had to submit a cover letter, an application and a letter of reference from a nonprofit, and complete an interview.
