Golf: Hyo Joo Kim had five birdies in a six-hole stretch and shot a 7-under 64 on Saturday at Highland Meadows to open a three-stroke lead in the Marathon Classic in Sylvania, Ohio.

Kim began the run on the par-4 fifth, parred the par-3 sixth, then ran off four straight on the par-5 seventh, par-3 eighth and par-4 ninth and 10th holes. The South Korean player added birdies on the par-3 14th and par-5 17th and parred the par-5 18th to finish at 15 under.

Kim had shares of the lead the first two days, opening with a 66 on her 21st birthday and shooting a 68 on Friday. She won the season-opening event in the Bahamas for her third career title.

Top-ranked Lydia Ko and Alison Lee were tied for second. Ko, the 2014 winner, had a bogey-free 67. Lee shot 66.

Vegas’ lead cut to three strokes: Jhonattan Vegas’ lead was down to three strokes when rain finally stopped third-round play in the Barbasol Championship in Opelike, Alabama.

Six shots ahead after a course-record 11-under 60 on Friday, Vegas was 1 over for the round and 16 under overall playing the par-4 14th when play was stopped on Grand National’s Lake Course.

The 29-year-old Venezuelan Olympic qualifier failed to qualify for the British Open and has only past champion status – he won the 2011 Bob Hope Classic for his lone tour title – on the PGA Tour. The winner Sunday will get a two-year exemption and a spot in the PGA Championship, but will not be exempt for the Masters.

David Toms and Aaron Baddeley were 13 under. The 49-year-old Toms was 4 under for the day with four holes left. Baddeley shot a 64, chipping in on the par-4 18th for his third straight birdie.

Karlovic, Muller advance to final

Tennis: Second-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia and third-seeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg advanced to the final of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championship in Newport, Rhode Island, with semifinal victories Saturday.

The 6-foot-11 Karlovic reached his third consecutive final on Newport’s grass courts, beating fourth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6).

In the first semifinal, Muller served 18 aces and won 97 percent of his first-serve points in a 6-3, 6-4 victory over eighth-seeded Donald Young. Muller is looking for his first title.

Britain, Argentina, France lead: Visiting teams Britain, Argentina, and France all won hard-fought doubles matches to take 2-1 leads in the Davis Cup quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, the United States couldn’t finish off Croatia in Portland, after Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig gave the brothers Bob and Mike Bryan only their fifth loss in cup doubles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, and kept the tie alive into Sunday.

Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot put Britain in position to move its cup defense into the semifinals after beating Serbia’s Nenad Zimonjic and Filip Krajinovic 6-1, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4 in Belgrade.

Dusan Lajovic won the second singles suspended overnight when he beat Jamie Ward in straight sets in the morning to level the tie, but Serbia captain Bogdan Obradovic decided to rest Janko Tipsarevic from the doubles and save him for the reverse singles on Sunday.

The veteran Zimonjic was paired for the first time in the cup with Krajinovic, who played with an injured wrist and viral infection but dominated the partnership.

On Sunday, Kyle Edmund has a chance to clinch a tie for the first time when he plays Lajovic.

Wilder retains WBC heavyweight

Boxing: Despite fighting mostly one-armed for half the fight, Deontay Wilder remained in control in the ring before heading to the hospital.

Wilder retained his WBC heavyweight title with a technical knockout when Chris Arreola’s corner stopped the fight after the eighth round at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

Arreola’s left eye appeared swollen shut. Wilder knocked down Arreola in the fourth and peppered him with left jabs and hooks after landing hard rights early. Promoter Lou DiBella said Wilder was taken to nearby UAB Hospital after a doctor confirmed he had a broken right hand and a probable distal tear in that biceps. Both injuries happened early in the fight.

Wilder showed reporters his injured biceps as he headed to the locker room and said he was already certain the hand was broken. He threw the right, his biggest weapon, sparingly after the fourth round.

Even hurting, Wilder didn’t lose his bravado. Before leaving the ring, he was talking about wanting to fight the winner of the upcoming Wladimir Klitschko-Tyson Fury fight or Anthony Joshua.

Diaz unanimously outpoints Vasquez: Felix Diaz unanimously outpointed Sammy Vasquez in a super lightweight bout.

The 10-round fight was initially announced as a majority draw, bringing boos from the Legacy Arena crowd. After a recount, Diaz (18-1) was ruled the winner, and Vasquez applauded him and pointed to Diaz when the final outcome was called out.

The difference came when the referee took a point from Vasquez (21-1) in the final round when his mouthpiece popped out for the third time in the fight. That changed Diaz’s margin to 96-93 from one judge and 95-94 the other two, who had initially called it even.

Diaz, an Olympic champion for the Dominican Republic in 2008, was coming off a majority decision loss to Lamont Peterson in October.

Rapids remain unbeaten

Soccer: Marlon Hairston scored, U.S. national team star Tim Howard had his second shutout in three games with Colorado and the Rapids beat Sporting Kansas City 1-0 in Commerce City, Colorado, to extend their franchise-record unbeaten streak to 14 games.

Colorado (10-2-7) hasn’t lost since April 9.

Hairston, who came on for Marco Pappa in the 62nd minute, deflected a Sporting pass, then took a feed from Dillon Powers and curled a right-footer from just outside the box into the top-right corner.

Howard, playing in his third MLS game since 2003, had three saves. He played the last 13 seasons in the English Premier League, the last 10 with Everton.

Sporting (8-10-4) has lost two in a row after a five-game unbeaten streak.

MLS-leading Dallas wins: Maximiliano Urriti scored and Fabian Castillo had two assists in MLS-leading FC Dallas’ 3-1 victory over the Chicago Fire in Frisco, Texas.

Urriti blasted a header into the top-right corner in the 23rd minute after Castillo beat a pair of defenders and sent a cross to the center of the box. In the 41st, Diaz fired a right-footer, from well outside the box, past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Matt Lampson, off the post and into the net.

Arturo Alvarez put Chicago (4-9-5) on the board in the first minute of stoppage time but, about a minute later, Castillo hit Mauro Rosales for the clinching goal.

Dallas (12-6-4) rebounded from a 5-0 loss at Seattle on Wednesday night.

Espindola, United tie Crew: Fabian Espindola scored in the 89th minute to give D.C. United the 1-1 tie with the Columbus Crew in Columbus, Ohio.

Espindola split three defenders to come up with a loose ball near the top of the box and slotted a low shot just beyond the fingertips of goalkeeper Steve Clark for United (5-7-7).

Columbus’ Kamara scored in the 63rd minute. The Crew (3-7-9) played a man down after Harrison Afful received a red card in the 74th.

Romania, Belarus canoe banned

Miscellany: The International Canoe Federation has banned sprint teams from Romania and Belarus from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics for widespread doping.

The ICF says its executive board imposed one-year suspensions for both teams “with immediate effect.”

ICF President Jose Perurena says “we will do everything within our powers to remove them (cheats) from our sport.”

Olympic places will be reallocated by Monday’s deadline after talks with the IOC and national Olympic bodies, the world canoeing body says.

The ICF says “systemic doping” by Romania’s team with meldonium, an eastern European heart drug banned since January, was proven after 11 athletes tested positive at training in April.

Five Belarus team members violated anti-doping rules at a training camp in France that is the subject of a criminal investigation.

Bonner leads Mercury: DeWanna Bonner hit four 3-pointers and finished with 33 points to help the host Phoenix Mercury beat the San Antonio Stars 83-64.

Bonner was 11 of 16 from the field and had eight rebounds. Lindsey Harding added a season-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, and Alex Harden had 12 points for the Mercury in her first career start.
