See our similarities

I read “Seeking light from dark days” in Sunday’s paper and wanted to point out that not all white Americans are ignoring the issues of race. Some of us live with this every day as well as black Americans.

My son is black (and white) and has gone through the same things other black Americans have gone through. I have seen only a small portion of what he has gone through, such as being pulled over by police multiple times while he was in high school.

I am white and had the same talk black parents had with their sons about being polite to police officers and do not argue with an officer. I still check in with him once a week to make sure he is okay even though he is an adult and married.

I understand there is a divide between black and white Americans today but not everyone feels hate. My family is mixed with black and white. I love my son and it does not matter what color we are. Maybe Americans should see what we have in common and appreciate the differences in color instead of hating the differences.
