Konta upsets Venus Williams for Stanford title

Tennis: Hard-hitting Johanna Konta whipped winners every which way and outslugged top-seeded Venus Williams to capture her first career singles title, winning the Bank of the West Classic 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 on Sunday in Stanford, California.

Her serve and return games equally solid, Konta held on in the third set after squandering a 4-1 lead in the second. When Williams netted her forehand return on the third match point, Konta dropped her racket to the ground and covered her face in triumph.

No. 3 seed Konta figured out Williams’ big serve for the second time this year, standing some 10 feet behind the baseline to return it and generating pace from Williams’ regular serves of well more than 100 mph.

The 25-year-old Konta also stunned Williams with the straight-sets victory in the first round at this year’s Australian Open.

She became the fourth-oldest first-time titlist this year.

Fognini scores straight-sets victory at Croatian Open: Fabio Fognini defeated Andrej Martin 6-4, 6-1 to win the Croatia Open in Umag.

The fourth-seeded Italian, who had played in Umag for nine consecutive years, secured his fourth career singles title and his first since February 2014 at Vina del Mar, Chile.

First tour title for Siegmund: Sixth-seeded Laura Siegemund clinched her first WTA title with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic in the Swedish Open final at Bastad.

Siegemund won 75 percent of her first-serve points and faced only one break point in the match.

Serena Williams withdraws from Montreal event: Serena Williams has pulled out of the Rogers Cup because of shoulder inflammation.

The three-time Rogers Cup champion was seeded first in the hard-court tournament and was set to have a bye in the first round.

Paris Saint-Germain prevails in Eugene

Layvin Kurzawa also scored for PSG on a free kick in the 61st minute in the International Champions Cup match. Stevan Jovetic scored for Inter Milan on a penalty kick in stoppage time following the first half.

Autzen Stadium, the home football field of the Oregon Ducks, hosted the match, part of the International Champions Cup. Real grass was laid down on the artificial turf field.

The International Champions Cup is an exhibition tournament involving 17 teams playing on four different continents. It serves a tuneup for the regular season.
