Freeman’s Ryan Maine wins individual title at Junior America’s Cup

Freeman High rising senior Ryan Maine won the individual championship and led Washington to the team title Thursday at the 44th annual Junior America’s Cup, a prestigious golf tournament that features 18 four-man teams representing Mexico, Canada and western U.S. states.

Maine shot rounds of 70, 67 and 71 to finish at 8-under 208 at the Guadalajara Country Club in Mexico. He played the last 10 holes in 4-under par, including birdies on 12, 13, 14 and 16, to hold off San Diego’s Cameron Sisk and British Columbia’s Tristan Mandur. Those two shot 68s, but Sisk finished two strokes behind Maine and Mandur was three three shots back.

Team Washington finished strong with a closing-round 7-under par 209. Sean Kato shot a 68, Carl Underwood had a 70 and Ian Siebers added a 71. Washington’s 54-hole total of 639 edged San Diego by one shot. Utah was third at 645.

California teams had won four of the previous five titles. Washington’s most recent championship came when it shared the title with Oregon in 2007.
