Portland man falls 250 feet at Crater Lake National Park

Associated Press

EUGENE, Ore. – A Portland man suffered serious injuries after falling about 250 feet into a drainage area at Crater Lake National Park.

The Register-Guard reports that 21-year-old Xiong Wei Yu was injured Saturday while exploring the area near the Pinnacles Trailhead. He got too close to the edge of the Wheeler Creek Canyon and fell into a creek drainage area.

Park spokeswoman Jennifer Evans said Yu landed on some snow that built up near the creek. She said Yu was trying to get a better look at rock formations when he slipped.

Park rangers and Oregon Department of Forestry wildland fire crews responded to the incident and carried Yu out to an ambulance.
