The Slice: The neckties were hung by the chimney with care

For fathers this weekend, it’s the age old question.

Should you open presents on Father’s Day Eve or wait until actual Father’s Day?

Let’s move on.

Wishing for a do-over: If you knew then what you know now, what would you have said to your favorite teacher on the last day of school?

Just wondering: Who do you know who most reminds you of an implausible character in a novel?

If Spokane and Tacoma switched locations: “Spokane would become Puyallup while Tacoma over here just isn’t possible,” wrote Lew Schrawyer.

The never-ending geography lesson: “After landing at LaGuardia several years ago, I recognized a woman I’d seen at O’Hare,” wrote Nancy MacKerrow. “We started talking and found we’d both come from Spokane, Washington. Another passenger asked why we had flown from Washington, D.C., to Chicago to get to New York. We explained.”

Pinching pennies: Bob Delzer had a friend who would accumulate three months of bills before mailing his payments, to save stamps.

Pattie Kaminski and her husband were at dinner with another couple when she heard the man ask his wife for a nickel, to round out the tip.

Fill ’er up: Marilyn White of Wallace read the retired Air Force tanker boom operator’s assertion that it’s no challenge to refuel a parked vehicle. (He was talking about applying military skills to civilian life.)

She’s not so sure. Marilyn recently found herself in the position of having to gas up her vehicle on her own for the first time. And she encountered a list of complications.

Parking in the wrong position, relative to the gas pump.

Inserting credit/debit card the wrong way.

Tangling, untangling the hose.

Turns out there is more than one kind of fuel. Who knew?

When you remove nozzle from your vehicle you drip gasoline on your shoe.

Her list goes on. Marilyn said she plans to call her sister for help next time she needs gas. And if her sister isn’t available, perhaps she could contact the Air Force.

Summer vacation road trip memories (Monday’s Slice): A friend noted that I overlooked the theme of children throwing up in the car.

Yes. Yes, I did.

Today’s Slice question: How will you react if this newspaper endorses a presidential candidate you despise?

Ellen Ballance’s favorite soft drink memory is of her cherished routine of having a Coca-Cola each shift when she was an RN working in a Dallas ER (and of the first one she had after Coke brought back the old recipe).
