Newsmakers: UConn’s Breanna Stewart up for Honda Award honors
Announced Connecticut basketball star Breanna Stewart and Michigan softball player Sierra Romero are among 12 Honda Award recipients who will vie for the top honor on Monday. The Honda winners are eligible for the Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year award. The 40th edition of the award recognizes leadership, academics and community service and will be handed on the campus of Southern California in Los Angeles.
The other winners are USC’s Samantha Bricio (volleyball), Duke’s Virginia Elena Carta (golf), Virginia’s Danielle Collins (tennis), Maryland’s Taylor Cummings (lacrosse), Syracuse’s Alyssa Manley (field hockey), Courtney Okolo (track & field), Penn State’s Raquel Rodriguez (soccer), Notre Dame’s Mollie Seidel (cross country), Florida’s Bridget Sloan (gymnastics) and Louisville’s Kelsi Worrell (swimming & diving).
Arrested Former Miami Dolphins WR Davone Bess is facing charges after getting into a standoff with police at his suburban Phoenix home. A judge ordered Bess released on $2,500 bond after his arrest on one felony count each of endangerment, unlawful flight and failure to stop for a police officer. According to charging documents, Bess was stopped in Gilbert late Sunday for driving without his headlights on. The documents say he pointed his finger like a gun at officers and moved it up and down, mimicking firing a gun. Police say Bess then fled to his home, where he waved a knife while still in his car.
Extended The Milwaukee Bucks have signed coach Jason Kidd to a three-year contract extension. The team said the agreement will keep Kidd in his position through the 2019-20 season.
Sidelined L.A. Galaxy defender Robbie Rogers will be sidelined for at least six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his ankle.
Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Callahan has undergone surgery to repair a labral tear in his right hip and will be sidelined about five months, which means he will not play for Team USA in the World Cup of Hockey.
Settled Nearly two years after former North Carolina football player Jackson Boyer suffered an alleged concussion during an off-campus hazing incident that involved at least four of his teammates, the university has reached a $795,000 settlement with Boyer and his family. Boyer was a non-scholarship WR at UNC when on Aug. 4, 2014, Boyer was involved in an altercation at the Aloft Hotel in Chapel Hill, where the football team stays during its weeks-long preseason camp. The altercation didn’t become public until weeks later, when Yahoo Sports reported that Boyer had suffered a concussion during a hazing incident.
Awarded Carolina LB Thomas Davis has won the Good Guy Award from the Professional Football Writers of America for his consistent cooperation with the media. The Good Guy Award is given to a NFL player for his qualities and professional style in helping pro football writers do their jobs.
Reported Forward Jimmy Vesey’s shortlist of teams includes the Buffalo Sabres, though college hockey’s top player is still leaning toward pursuing free agency, the player’s agent told The Associated Press. The Sabres took a calculated risk in giving up their second of four third-round draft picks to essentially gain exclusive negotiating rights with no guarantee the Vesey will sign a contract.
