Education Notebook: Salk team bringing prosthetic arm to national competition

After winning first place at the Spokane Regional MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement) competition and the state competition, Salk Middle School’s MESA team is competing at nationals in Utah, Thursday-Sunday.

Katie Allbery, Lindsey Armijo, Analiese Turner and Allie Wood created a prosthetic arm that moves robotically and can pick up, release and throw various objects.

New student registration for elementary and middle schools at Spokane Public Schools is open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. daily through Aug. 11 at the administration building, 200 N. Bernard St.

Registration for high school students is accepted at neighborhood high schools through the summer.

Families of new kindergarteners and first-graders should bring proof of age and residence, and immunization records. Second- through eighth-graders only need immunization records and proof of residency to register.

Parents and guardians should contact their school office after Aug. 15 to verify enrollment and receive school-specific information.

If the child’s first language, or the language spoken at home, is not English, parents and guardians should contact Debbie Battista at (509) 354-3263 or debbieba@ spokaneschools.org to make a registration appointment.

The Mead School District board of directors has selected Chad Burchard to replace Maureen O’Connor as school board director.

Burchard, who co-chaired the Citizen’s Advisory Committee, took the oath of office on June 13 and will serve as an appointee to the school board until November 2017.

The 14th annual Northwest Christian golf tournament, Touchdown & Tees Golf Benefit, will be Friday.

The tournament uses a scramble format.

Golfers can form their own team or be placed in a foursome.

The tournament will be at Deer Park Golf Club, 1201 N. Country Club Drive, Deer Park. There will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Entry fees, which include greens fees, cart rental, lunch and prizes, are $110 per person. All proceeds benefit the NWC Athletic Fund.
