WNBA: Breanna Stewart made five 3-pointers and tied a career high with 29 points and the Seattle Storm used a big first half to beat the visiting Connecticut Sun 98-81 on Friday night.

Stewart was 9 of 15 from the field, 6 of 6 at the line, and had nine rebounds, six assists, three steals and three blocks. The former UConn star was selected No. 1 overall this year in the WNBA draft.

Seattle opened with a 10-0 run – with two 3-pointers by Stewart – and never trailed.

Los Angeles hands Minnesota its first loss: Kristi Toliver tied a career high with seven 3-pointers and scored 25 points to help the Los Angeles Sparks beat host Minnesota 94-76, ending the defending champion Lynx’s record season-opening winning streak at 13 games.

Olympics: Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal has declined an invitation to play for the United States in the Rio Olympics.

Beal said on Twitter that he has decided to dedicate his summer to getting into shape for next season. He called the invitation from USA Basketball “the ultimate honor.”

Roy named coach at Seattle’s Nathan Hale

Miscellany: Former Washington Huskies star Brandon Roy has been hired as the boys basketball coach at Nathan Hale High School, Seattle Public Schools executive director of athletics Eric McCurdy confirmed.

Roy, a former Garfield High School standout, was the 2005-06 Pac-10 player of the year at UW. He played in the NBA from 2006-13 (and was a three-time All-Star and the 2006-07 NBA Rookie of the Year) before being forced to retire because of knee injuries.
