In Brief: Stewart’s 29 lead Storm past Sun

WNBA: Breanna Stewart made five 3-pointers and tied a career high with 29 points and the Seattle Storm used a big first half to beat the visiting Connecticut Sun 98-81 on Friday night.

Stewart was 9 of 15 from the field, 6 of 6 at the line, and had nine rebounds, six assists, three steals and three blocks. The former UConn star was selected No. 1 overall this year in the WNBA draft.

Seattle opened with a 10-0 run – with two 3-pointers by Stewart – and never trailed.

Stewart, Sue Bird and Jewell Loyd combined for 41 points. Stewart was 5 of 5 from 3-point range as Seattle made 8 of 12.

Los Angeles hands Minnesota its first loss: Kristi Toliver tied a career high with seven 3-pointers and scored 25 points to help the Los Angeles Sparks beat host Minnesota 94-76, ending the defending champion Lynx’s record season-opening winning streak at 13 games.

Arizona tops Oklahoma State 9-3

College baseball: Nathan Bannister and two relievers pitched a four-hitter, Arizona had 14 hits against what had been the best pitching staff in the NCAA Tournament, and the Wildcats beat Oklahoma State 9-3 at the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, to force a rematch Saturday.

In the second semifinal of the day, Andrew Beckwith pitched his second straight complete game and set a school record with his nation-leading 14th win, and Coastal Carolina stayed alive with a 4-1 victory over TCU.

NFL: Clay Matthews, Julius Peppers and James Harrison will be interviewed next month by NFL officials in connection to a media report that linked them to the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

A letter from NFL executive Adolpho Birch that was obtained by the Associated Press says Green Bay linebackers Matthews and Peppers and Pittsburgh linebacker Harrison will be interviewed when training camps open.

Ex-NFL player shot during attempted break-in: A homeowner in Portland shot an intruder this week who turned out to be former Detroit Lions cornerback Stanley Wilson II, authorities said.

Wilson was naked and wounded Wednesday when officers found him in a water fountain in the backyard of the multimillion-dollar home, Multnomah County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Alexander said.

Rahm, Hurley share lead at Congressional

Golf: Jon Rahm and Billy Hurley III shared the Quicken Loans National lead, three strokes ahead of Vijay Singh going into the weekend at Congressional in Bethesda, Maryland.

Playing together again, Rahm and Hurley went shot-for-shot to reach 11 under. Hurley, a Naval Academy graduate who lives in nearby Annapolis, shot a 6-under 65, and Rahm bogeyed the 18th hole for a 67 in his second round as a professional.

Uehara matches course record at Pinnacle: Japan’s Ayako Uehara matched the course record with a 9-under 62 to take the first-round lead in the LPGA Tour’s NW Arkansas Championship at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers, Arkansas.

Sauers rebounds at University Ridge: Gene Sauers carded a 9-under 63 and rebounded from a bulging disk to share the first-round lead with Estaban Toledo in the PGA Tour Champions’ inaugural American Family Insurance Championship at University Ridge in Madison, Wisconsin.

Three lead at BMW International Open: Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat shot an 8-under 64 for a share of the BMW International Open lead with Sweden’s Henrik Stenson and France’s Raphael Jacquelin.

Beal declines invite

Olympics: Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal has declined an invitation to play for the United States in the Rio Olympics.

Beal said on Twitter that he has decided to dedicate his summer to getting into shape for next season. He called the invitation from USA Basketball “the ultimate honor.”

USA Diving gets second spot in women’s 3-meter: USA Diving has been awarded a second spot in the women’s 3-meter competition for the Rio Olympics after initially qualifying only one diver.

Roy named coach at Seattle’s Nathan Hale

Miscellany: Former Washington Huskies star Brandon Roy has been hired as the boys basketball coach at Nathan Hale High School, Seattle Public Schools executive director of athletics Eric McCurdy confirmed.

Roy, a former Garfield High School standout, was the 2005-06 Pac-10 player of the year at UW. He played in the NBA from 2006-13 (and was a three-time All-Star and the 2006-07 NBA Rookie of the Year) before being forced to retire because of knee injuries.

Manziel’s lawyer seeks plea deal: An attorney handling Johnny Manziel’s domestic violence case expressed doubts about the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback’s ability to stay clean and said he was given a receipt that shows Manziel may have spent more than $1,000 at a drug paraphernalia store just 15 hours after he was involved in a hit-and-run crash, according to a lengthy text message accidentally sent to the Associated Press.

Briles officially out at Baylor: Baylor and Art Briles have mutually agreed to part ways, the move coming almost a month after the release of a scathing report over the university’s handling of sexual assault complaints against players and the coach being suspended by school regents “with intent to terminate.”
