Officers nab man suspected of robbing Hillyard convenience store

From staff reports

A 21-year-old man suspected of shoplifting $10 worth of snacks from a Hillyard convenience store now faces a first-degree robbery charge.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, Zachary S. Trejo allegedly stole donuts, sour gummy bears, frosted cookies and a protein bar from the Hillyard Mini-Mart at 5803 N. Market St.

According to court records, a clerk followed Trejo out of the store and confronted him, and Trejo struck him with a skateboard – once in the shoulder and once in the head. The clerk fell to the ground and suffered minor abrasions.

Police arrived and interviewed witnesses, and an officer spotted a man running near the intersection of North Regal Street and East Sanson Avenue, court documents say. After a short foot chase, the officer caught and arrested Trejo. Multiple witnesses identified him as the assailant.

Trejo is being held in the Spokane County Jail pending a court appearance Monday afternoon.
