College Baseball: Gonzaga knocks off No. 7 TCU 4-3; WSU wins
Starting pitcher Brandon Bailey was strong for seven innings and Gonzaga rallied for two runs in the seventh inning to beat No. 7 TCU 4-3 in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday in the Bulldogs’ first matchup against a ranked opponent this season.
Bailey (2-0) allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks, striking out nine.
Sam Hellinger and Daniel Bies combined for two scoreless innings of relief. Bies picked up his first save, striking out Dane Steinhagen – the only batter he faced – with a runner on third to end the game.
The Bulldogs (5-4) were down 3-2 entering the seventh before rallying against Horned Frogs reliever Preston Guillory.
With one out, Sam Brown singled up the middle and went to second on Patrick Chung’s single. Preseason All-WCC first baseman Taylor Jones then lashed a double down the left-field line, plating Brown and moving Chung to third. Chung came home on a sacrifice fly by Justin Jacobs.
Guillory took the loss (0-1), allowing two earned runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Brown, Jones, Tyler Frost and Dustin Breshears all had two hits.
TCU fell to 7-2. The teams square off again in Fort Worth on Saturday at noon and Sunday at 11 a.m.
Washington State 10, Utah Valley 1: The Cougars banged out 17 hits and pitchers Ryan Ward and Ryan Walker combined for 14 strikeouts in a 10-1 victory over the Wolverines in Pullman.
Ward struck out eight for WSU (4-6), allowing one earned run on four hits in five innings to pick up his first career win. Walker was equally as dominant, striking out six over four scoreless innings to pick up his first save of the season.
Derek Chapman led the way on offense, going 4 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Six Cougars recorded multiple hits and Cameron Frost hit his second home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fifth. Patrick McGrath also drove in three runs.
Utah Valley (5-6) starting pitcher Jackson Cofer (1-2) took the loss allowing seven runs, five earned in 4 1/3 innings.
The teams play again on Saturday at 2 p.m.
