Chief should have degree

I worked as a police officer in California. I understand the culture and mentality of law enforcement. In searching for a new chief, it seems some don’t think a four-year degree is necessary. Trust me it is.

The new chief will be the CEO of an organization with hundreds of employees and tens of millions of dollars. Someone trained in IT, forensics science, labor negotiations, personnel management and the law. We need a qualified leader, not an insider who worked their way up the career ladder.

On the way to the top, a person makes friends and enemies. They would promote their friends, qualified or not, and punish their enemies. This is exactly the environment we have encountered in the last decade of failing managers.

Furthermore, an in-house person brings the stink of the Police Guild. This institution is only interested in securing the best pay contract and protecting their own. It is a cancer that will continue to make the department suspect and unaccountable to the community.

We need a well-educated individual with the smarts to turn this out-of-control agency into the professional model that Spokane deserves. Let’s get it right this time.
