Man rescued from Lake Coeur d’Alene after kayak flipped

A fisherman who capsized in Lake Coeur d’Alene Tuesday was rescued by another boater who was flagged down by joggers who heard the fisherman’s cries for help.

The fisherman, identified as 69-year-old Anthony Nixon, was fishing from his kayak when he flipped over Tuesday morning near Higgins Point, according to the Kootenai Count Sheriff’s Office. Nixon was wearing a life jacket and clung to his overturned kayak as he yelled for help.

Two joggers on the Centennial Trail heard his cries and flagged down a man towing a boat. The man, identified as 56-year-old Kevin Waites, launched his boat and went out and rescued Nixon, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Nixon estimated he had been in the water for about 20 minutes, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He was cold but unharmed.
