Two women fatally shot in Yakima on Saturday

Yakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA – Two women were shot to death early Saturday morning near a Moneytree lending business in Yakima.

Police responding to a call about shots being fired found one woman’s body in the Moneytree parking lot near a silver sedan and the other on a street, said Yakima police spokesman Mike Bastinelli.

“We don’t know if she was trying to get away or what,” he said of the woman found in the street.

A window of the Moneytree lending business was broken, but it wasn’t clear if that had anything to do with the incident, Bastinelli said.

A husband and son of one of the victims wept as they clutched one another after being brought to the scene by police to identify one of the bodies.

Police have not released the women’s names pending notification of family members, Bastinelli said.

Rafael Gomez, owner of La Monentia bakery near the Moneytree, said a frightened customer came into the store reporting there was a body in the street around 6:25 a.m. Gomez said he did not hear any gunshots because music was playing in his bakery.

Gomez said he went out and saw the body of one woman in the street, and police were already at the scene and covering the body.

Investigators combed through a car that one of the women’s body was found near in the parking lot, and later had it towed from the scene.
