Trump support unjustified
Carolee Bacon, in her March 19 letter, used the word “disturbing” to characterize Steve Massey’s critique of evangelical Christian support for Donald Trump.
Massey’s column was certainly misinformed, given his failure to see that Trump is the logical culmination of evangelical involvement in U.S. elections since Nixon. In using his Southern Strategy, Nixon played on white people’s fear surrounding race as a basis for support. This strategy continues today.
What is truly disturbing in Bacon’s letter is her justification for supporting Trump. Does she truly believe that people should vote for killers, thieves and adulterers? It is a good thing that she is not a teacher of ethics. Her biblical analogy is totally misplaced. Absent any reference to Jesus, her claim to not judge rings hollow for she is making a judgment in her political choices.
In parroting Trump, she has confused being politically incorrect with deliberate rudeness, petulant arrogance and fawning narcissism. These traits are hardly the hallmarks of political incorrectness. The irony, which seems to have eluded both Massey and Bacon, is that most politicians never have any intention of addressing Christian concerns and neither does Trump.
