Area roundup: North Idaho rolls to softball sweep

Amber Hawkes went 3 for 3 with a pair of home runs, four runs batted in and three runs scored to power the North Idaho Cardinals (13-3, 7-1) to a five-inning 17-3 victory over the visiting Columbia Basin Hawks (14-6, 6-2) and a sweep of the Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday.

Nikki Miller homered twice and drove in four runs to lead the Cardinals to a 9-7 win in the opener. Makinsey Finch had a pinch-hit run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score at 7.

Baseball

Connor Anderson had four hits, including a home run, to propel the visiting Yakima Valley Yaks (12-8, 2-0) to an 8-3 victory over the CC Spokane Sasquatch (11-5, 0-2) and a sweep of the NWAC doubleheader.

The Yaks rode the arm of Chris Petrosie to a 6-1 win in the opener.

Mitchell Cox had five hits on the day, including a home run, to pace CCS.

Soccer

The Spokane Shadow men begin their quest for a third straight EPLWA title with a match at Yakima on May 1. The home opener is May 7 against Vancouver.

The Spokane Shadow women debut in the Northwest Premier League on May 1 at Yakima, before their home opener on May 7 against Twin Cities.

Award

Idaho Vandals’ Sophie Hausmann was named the Big Sky’s women’s golfer of the week after she tied for 28th at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational.
