Historic scavenger hunt highlights preservation month
For the second year in a row, the Spokane City/County Historic Preservation Office is laying down a challenge.
The office has assembled a scavenger hunt in which participants have to find and identify various architectural features around the city, including a number of residential locations.
The scavenger hunt is timed to coincide with National Preservation Month in May.
Those who enter and try to find the treasures become part of a drawing for prizes.
The prizes are a guided tour of the historic County Courthouse with a trip to the top of the tower; a tour of the Masonic Temple; two tickets to Spokane Preservation Advocates’ home tour in the fall; or a private tour of the Undercliff House in the Marycliff-Cliff Park Historic District.
To enter, go to historicspokane.org /preservation-month-2016.
In addition to the scavenger hunt, the Spokane Library is offering a house history workshop on May 20 from 10 a.m. to noon.
The session at the downtown branch, 906 W. Main Ave., will provide a how-to on researching the history of a home.
To register, click on the library calendar at spokanelibrary.org.
The month will conclude with a preservation happy hour at the Steam Plant, 159 S. Lincoln St., from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on May 26.
A $20 cover charge will include appetizers and a drink ticket. Guests will hear a fun presentation on preservation successes and a video history of the Steam Plant, which is 100 years old this year.
