Scott Stockwell is going back to the gym where he was introduced to basketball as a youth.

Stockwell has been named the Coeur d’Alene girls coach, replacing the retired Dale Poffenroth.

A Post Falls High graduate, it will be Stockwell’s first head coaching job. He has assisted his dad, Lakeland boys coach Dave Stockwell, the last five years.

“I thought I’d throw myself in the mix and didn’t really expect anything of it to be honest,” Stockwell, 29, said. “I’m extremely blessed to get the consideration.”

Stockwell remembers when he was 4 years old being a water boy for the CdA girls team when his father assisted Dave Fealko.

“I sat on the bench when girls basketball was pretty fun to watch,” Stockwell said.

Stockwell owns his own personal training business in Hayden.

Newly named Coeur d’Alene athletic director Mike Lindquist was on Dave Stockwell’s coaching staff at Post Falls when Scott was at the school.

“It’s going to be great to work with Scott,” Lindquist said. “It’s been great to see him grow up and get to run his own business. It’s been exciting to me to see that progression.”

Stockwell was a four-year starter for his dad at Post Falls. He played two years at North Idaho College before two more years at Carroll College.

“I’ve learned a lot from my dad,” Stockwell said. “I admire his love for the game. I’m ready to take on my own program and continue what he’s taught me. I’m excited to rebuild Coeur d’Alene to championship status and work my way up the ranks in the 5A level.”

Poffenroth, 67, retired to spend more time with his wife and growing family. He coached four CdA teams to state titles and Central Valley to three state titles. His overall record was 607-169.
