College roundup: Harper third, Dodig fourth at Pac-12 combined events championships

Washington State’s Liz Harper finished third in the heptathlon and Dino Dodig fourth in the decathlon at Pac-12 Track & Field Combined Events Championships at Husky Track in Seattle on Sunday.

Harper posted a lifetime-best of 5,564 points in the heptathlon, seventh-best in WSU history. Teammate Lindsey Schauble placed 10th among the 14 competitors with 4,626 points.

USC’s Amalie Iuel won her second Pac-12 heptathlon title with 6,011 points.

In the decathlon, Dodig, scored 7,339 points for fourth in the 10-man field.

Pau Tonnesen of Arizona scored 7,942 points to win back-to-back titles.

The conference track and field championships continue Saturday and Sunday with the individual and relay events in Seattle.

Baseball

Utah 11, Washington State 5: Dallas Carroll and Hunter Simmons had three hits each in a 14-hit attack as the Utes (17-24, 12-8 Pac-12) evened their three-game series with the Cougars (15-26, 8-15) at a game apiece with a victory in Pullman.

Dugan Shirer had two hits and Patrick McGrath a two run homer for the Cougars.

Utah scored three runs across in the fifth inning, using two hits, two walks and an error to take a 6-4 advantage and led the rest of the way, adding single runs in the seventh and eighth and three in the ninth.

The series wraps up Monday at 7 p.m.

Washington 6, USC 0: Ryan Schmitten (1-2) allowed just one hit over seven innings and the pitching staff faced just one batter over the minimum as the Huskies beat the Trojans in Los Angeles.

No. 21 Washington (27-16, 13-8 Pac-12) took two of three games over USC (21-24, 10-11) to stay atop the conference standings.
