Newsmakers: Prosecutor delays charging decision against Minnesota player

Delayed A prosecutor has delayed a decision on whether to charge Minnesota basketball player Reggie Lynch, who was arrested on suspicion of criminal sexual conduct last weekend. The Hennepin County Attorney’s office on Tuesday deferred a decision in the case of Lynch, who was released from jail when a 36-hour hold expired.

Backed out The deputy athletic director at the University of Utah, who last week was named athletic director at Montana State University, has backed out of the job. MSU President Waded Cruzado said Kyle Brennan told her that taking the job “didn’t feel right.”

Announced Marathon world-record holder Dennis Kimetto won’t run at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics after making himself unavailable for Kenya’s team. Two-time London Marathon champion and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Wilson Kipsang also asked not to be considered. …Terence Crawford and Viktor Postol, both unbeaten 140-pound champions, will meet in a title unification fight July 23 in Las Vegas. Promoter Bob Arum announced the bout at a news conference in Los Angeles.

Signed Saints general manager Mickey Loomis says rookie safety Vonn Bell, whom New Orleans selected in the second round of this year’s NFL draft, has signed a four-year contract. Bell was the Saints’ latter of two second-round picks, taken 61st overall out of Ohio State.

Sidelined Mavericks guard Devin Harris has had his left big toe and left thumb surgically repaired. Harris had both surgeries in New York. They were performed by different doctors at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Died NBA and college coach Rex Hughes, who coached at Kent State, Southern California and UNLV has died. He was 77. USC said that Hughes died of cancer a day earlier in Nipomo, a town along the central coast of California.
