Officers involved in West Wynn Motel shooting identified

The Spokane Police Department has released the names of the officers involved in a shooting at the West Wynn Motel on Sunset Boulevard on May 2.

Officers responded to the motel after Aaron Johnson, 32, called 911 several times to report he was being threatened. Motel surveillance footage shows Johnson with what appears to be a gun in his hand chasing a police officer before Johnson was shot.

Officer Shane Phillips fired at Johnson, wounding him. Officer Stephen Anderson was also at the scene but did not fire his weapon.

The gun Johnson was holding was later determined to be a replica. Johnson has a mental illness and was previously wounded in a confrontation with police in 2014.

Phillips was involved in a fatal shooting in 2015. Kevin L. McDaniel was shot by police after police and witnesses said McDaniel came running toward officers while firing a gun. The shooting was ruled justified by the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office.
