College baseball: Gonzaga moves into tie for first in West Coast Conference

Brandon Bailey pitched a complete-game seven-hitter, striking out 10 and walking none, as Gonzaga moved into a tie for first place in West Coast Conference baseball with a 4-1 victory over Loyola Marymount on Friday to open a three-game series in Los Angeles.

Bailey (8-3) allowed just three hits after the Lions (26-24, 13-12) reached him for two singles and a double in the third inning.

The Bulldogs (28-15, 14-8) jumped ahead 2-0 in the first on Justing Jacobs’ RBI double to right and Dustin Breshears’ RBI single to right. Breshears added a two-out, two-run single in the ninth.

GU moved into a tie with Saint Mary’s, which lost to Pepperdine.

Washington State 9, Washington 3: Shane Matheny and Ty Johnson had two-run singles during a seven-run sixth as the Cougars (15-28, 8-17 Pac-12) opened a three-game series by knocking the Huskies (27-17, 13-9) out of first place, one game behind Utah.

Ryan Walker earned his fourth save, allowing three hits during the final four innings while striking out four.
