College track and field: Eastern Washington athletes win three titles at Big Sky Championships

Seniors Katie Mahoney and Kaytlyn Coleman, and freshman Larry Still picked up wins Friday for Eastern Washington as the Big Sky Conference outdoor track and field championships opened in Greeley, Colorado.

Coleman broke her school record in the hammer with a winning toss of 203 feet, 1 inch, which ranks fifth in Big Sky history. Coleman had the three best throws of the day.

Mahoney won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10 minutes, 33.19 seconds for her first win at the conference meet after scoring 31 points at previous meets. Eagles junior Paula Gil-Echevarria placed third in 10:45.78.

Still won the pole vault with a school-record 17- 3/4, giving him an outdoors and indoors title in his first season. Idaho’s Matt Sullivan cleared the same height, but Still won the title by clearing 16-8 3/4 on his first attempt while Sullivan needed three tries.

EWU senior Joey Payne placed second in the men’s javelin at 217-3.

Eastern’s women lead the early scoring race with 29 points.
