Washington preps: Wenatchee’s Grady Miller one-hits Gonzaga Prep in State 5A baseball opener
Senior Grady Miller pitched a one-hitter Saturday as Wenatchee opened the State 4A baseball playoffs with a 1-0 win over Gonzaga Prep at Wenatchee High School.
Blake Bonham scratched out the lone hit for the Bullpups, who finished 18-7.
Junior Seth Kuykendall checked Wenatchee on three hits, but the Panthers pushed across a run in the third inning.
Wenatchee later defeated West Valley (Yakima) 5-2 to improve to 24-0 and advance to the state semifinals.
The Panthers will meet Skyline at 4 p.m. Friday at Gesa Stadium in Pasco.
Kentwood is one of the other semifinalists.
State 1A
Desmond Parisotto pitched a five-hitter and Jack Paukert went 1 for 2 with two runs as Freeman defeated Cashmere 3-2 in a quarterfinal in Moses Lake.
The Scotties (21-3), riding a nine-game winning streak, qualified for the state semifinals for the second consecutive year. They’ll play defending state champion Hoquiam at 4 p.m. Friday at Yakima’s County Stadium.
Freeman’s Keegan Cottrell went 1 for 3 with an RBI single to tie the game in the fifth.
Freeman opened the day with a 13-inning, 2-1 win over Zillah. McKade Cottrell pitched the first 10 innings and struck out 22. Keegan Cottrell went 3 for 6 for the Scotties.
Hoquiam defeated Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) 10-4 in the quarterfinals in Moses Lake as Jack Skinner had three hits, including two doubles.
Nason Dvorak led the Eagles (15-10), finishing 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Lakeside began the day with a 7-6 win over Kiona-Benton. Reliever Nate Johnson recorded the final two outs with two runners in scoring position in the seventh.
Hoquiam started the day with a 3-2 win over Medical Lake in nine innings.
Overlake and Vashon Island are the other semifinalists.
State 2B
Toledo edged Colfax 2-0 in a quarterfinal at Eastmont High in East Wenatchee, ending the Bulldogs’ season at 22-2.
Colfax began the day with a 6-3 victory over Okanogan.
In other openers, Wilbur-Creston lost to Brewster 16-1 at Gonzaga Prep and St. George’s lost to Pe Ell/Willapa Valley 6-2 in Chehalis.
Pe Ell/Willapa Valley went on to defeat La Conner and make the state semifinals. It will meet Toutle Lake.
State 1B
Colton (22-3), which has reached the state finals five times in the last nine years, qualified for the championship game by defeating Riverside Christian 11-5 in a semifinal in Walla Walla.
The Wildcats opened the day with a 6-0 win over Liberty Christian as Brady Chadwick struck out five and walked one.
Colton’s Peter Schultheis went 5 for 7 on the day with six RBIs.
Colton will meet Evergreen Lutheran at 4 p.m. Saturday in Centralia.
Republic dropped a 6-5 quarterfinal against Riverside Christian to finish 19-2. The Tigers had a 12-game winning streak snapped.
Softball
2A regional
Taylor Manrique had two hits and Lexi Alvacado homered as led East Valley (Yakima) defeated visiting West Valley 5-4 to qualify for next weekend’s state tournament in Selah. The Red Devils improved to 18-6 and the Eagles finished 13-9.
2B regional
Rain interrupted the tournament at Franklin Park, but not before Kettle Falls, DeSales, Asotin and Dayton qualified for next weekend’s state tournament in Yakima.
The final seven games were rescheduled for Tuesday at Dwight Merkel Field. Two more teams will qualify for state.
Kettle Falls made state by defeating Springdale 18-7 behind Kendall Elliott’s two-hit, eight-strikeout effort. Ali Trenkle went 3 for 4 with three RBIs for the Bulldogs, who trailed 3-0 before a 14-run fourth.
Dayton qualified with a 6-1 victory over Colfax. Savannah McFarland struck out 11 and Kelly Moore went 2 for 2 with two RBIs for Dayton.
In other openers, Asotin held off Northwest Christian 11-8 and DeSales topped Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 10-5.
Tuesday’s 1 p.m. semifinals are DeSales against Kettle Falls and Asotin against Dayton. Loser-out, winner-to-state games will be LRS against Springdale and NWC against Colfax.
1B regional
Colton and Pomeroy advanced to the title game and qualified for next weekend’s state tournament in Yakima. Rain interrupted their championship game at Medical Lake, which reportedly will not be made up.
Colton defeated Touchet 3-1 in one semifinal. Pomeroy rolled past Almira/Coulee-Hartline 11-2 in the other.
Emily Schultheis pitched a four-hitter, striking out three and walking none, in Colton’s win.
Toni Cloud went 4 for 4 with a homer and five RBIs for Pomeroy, which qualified for state for the first time in fastpitch. Kacey Halbert pitched a five-hitter.
ACH rebounded to make state and defeated Liberty Christian 15-5 in the game for third and fourth seeds to state.
Tennis
Lewis and Clark’s Kyle Fager defeated fellow Tiger Jacob Johnson 6-0, 6-2 for the 4A regional boys singles title at Hart Field.
Central Valley Kyra Harames topped Mead’s Katie Kuka 6-3, 7-5 for the girls singles title.
Pullman’s boys and Cheney’s girls won the team titles at the District 7 2A tournament at Washington State University.
Pullman scored 48 points to hold off Cheney (41) and Clarkston (39). Cheney’s girls scored 46 for a nine-point gap on Pullman and 11 on West Valley.
Clarkston junior Gregory Arthur defeated fellow Bantams classmate Don Arsnev 6-0, 6-0 for the boys singles title.
Cheney junior Bridget Calvert defeated WV freshman Ava Raney 6-3, 6-3 for the girls singles title.
