Area roundup: Whitworth’s Corey Burt best in West

Whitworth senior Corey Burt has been named the 2016 West Region Outdoor Men’s Field Athlete of the Year, it was announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Burt ranks among the top 15 nationally in the shot put and discus. His shot put mark of 58 feet, 3 1/4 inches, ranks first in NCAA Division III, while his discus mark of 164-6 ranks 11th.

Baseball

Whitworth senior outfielder Jeremy Druffel was named to the All-West Region second team by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Freshman starting pitcher Hugh Smith made the third team.
