College roundup: Brandon Bailey’s 17 strikeouts propel Gonzaga into next round of WCC baseball tournament winner’s bracket

Brandon Bailey struck out 17 batters in a complete-game effort, Jeffrey Bohling and Sam Brown drove in all five runs and the Gonzaga Bulldogs defeated the BYU Cougars 5-3 in the first round of the West Coast Conference baseball championships in Stockton, California.

Bailey allowed three solo home runs - one in each of the seventh through ninth innings - and walked just one batter as he helped send GU to a 3:30 p.m. game Friday with top-seeded Saint Mary’s, which defeated Pepperdine 8-7 in 11 innings.

Track and field

  • Inclement weather in Lawrence, Kansas, postponed the completion of all men’s and women’s NCAA D1 championship events.   • Whitworth’s Everett Kleven cleared 16-6 3/4 to finish fifth in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III championships at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Corey Burt finished ninth in the discus with a throw of 164-3, falling just 3 inches short of a personal best.
