Spokane teachers ‘walk-in’ to protest conditions they call unsafe

Teachers and staff at 50 of Spokane Public Schools 55 schools participated in a walk-in Friday morning in an effort to draw attention to school safety issues.

“It’s just to call attention that we’re out here,” said Spokane Education Association President Jenny Rose. “We’re doing the work. We want to feel supported by the community.”

The walk-in occurred on the year anniversary of Spokane Public Schools teachers walking out of school last year.

Teachers came to work early Friday and walked in together before their workday started. Some sites had food or music playing, Rose said.

Rose addressed the Spokane Public Schools board of directors on May 11. She said a district wide effort to reduce suspensions hasn’t been properly supported and has put teachers at risk.
