Soccer: Shadow men, women sweep Yakima

Joel Duncan scored an early goal and Zach Hamer added late insurance Saturday as the Spokane Shadow defeated Yakima 2-0 in Evergreen Premier League play at Spokane Falls Community College.

Spokane’s Jesse Retan got to the ball after a deflection in the middle and sliced it to the far post for a waiting Duncan at 15 minutes. Hamer scored on a header at 76 minutes, off Eric Espinoza’s corner kick.

Spokane’s Tony Watters made two crucial saves early in the second half to help preserve the shutout.

Spokane (3-1-1, nine points) won its third consecutive match and stands in second place, three points behind Vancouver.

Women

Sarah Cox added two goals and Marissa Mykines had one goal and two assists for the Shadow, who scored twice in the first 12 minutes.
