Obama should remember servicemembers

Amy Goodman’s editorial entitled “Obama should just listen in Japan” emphasizes that our president should meet Japanese survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, hear their stories and then “listen.” I agree.

And then, I would add, as he begins the long flight home from Japan, he should think about and remember the thousands upon thousands of servicemen and servicewomen killed at places such as Leyte, the Philippine Islands, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Tarawa, Guadalcanal, Midway, Truk, Midway and, finally, Hawaii.

They died to pave the road from Hawaii to Saipan, the Pacific island from which the atom bomb carrying B-29 originated. And their deaths were no more or less significant than those at Hiroshima or Nagasaki.
