Newsmakers: Mariners outright 3 players to Triple-A Tacoma

Announced The Seattle Mariners on Wednesday outrighted catcher Steve Clevenger and pitchers Charlie Furbush and Ryan Cook to Triple-A Tacoma, and claimed right-handed pitcher Ryan Weber off waivers from Atlanta. All three players sent to Tacoma have been on the 60-day disabled list and each has the right to choose free agency.

Clevenger was suspended by the team in September for a series of tweets regarding a police shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the Black Lives Matter movement. He was removed from the suspended list and placed on the 60-day disabled list on Oct. 31.

Furbush is expected to be out until the 2018 season due to shoulder issues.

The Rangers have received righty Adrian Sampson on a waiver claim from the Mariners. Sampson made his major league debut last season before surgery to repair of flexor tendon in his right elbow. He is expected to be in an injury rehabilitation program for the start of the 2017 season. Sampson was on Seattle’s 60-day disabled list, and has been transferred to the Rangers’ 60-day DL.

Scheduled The World Boxing Association has finally sanctioned a fight between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko for its “super” heavyweight title. The fight will take place in the spring of 2017, but only if Joshua beats Eric Molina on Dec. 10in the British boxer’s second defense of his IBF title.

The WBA super belt is vacant after Tyson Fury relinquished it last month, citing “clinical depression.” Fury beat Klitschko in November last year to take the WBA, IBF and minor WBO titles off the Ukrainian boxer.

Named Tennis star Juan Martin Del Potro will lead Argentina’s team for the Davis Cup final against Croatia later this month in Zagreb. Argentina captain Daniel Orsanic named Del Potro along with Federico Delbonis, Guido Pella and Leonardo Mayer.

Reported German star Bernhard Langer expects to play this week in the Dominion Charity Classic after missing the PGA Tour Champions’ playoff opener last week because of a knee injury. The 59-year-old played nine practice rounds Monday and Tuesday to prepare for the event that starts Friday at The Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course. He re-aggravated the injury at home doing routine spinning.

Signed The San Francisco Giants signed right-hander Josh Johnson to a minor league contract with the hopes he can perform after three Tommy John elbow surgeries. General manager Bobby Evans said it’s still undetermined whether Johnson will be invited to big league camp at spring training – and Johnson must show he’s healthy and can be effective again.

The 6-foot-7 pitcher was last in the majors with Toronto in 2013, having undergone a trio of reconstructive elbow surgeries. He had tried to come back with the Padres in 2015 before having a setback in the minors and needing the third procedure.

The 32-year-old Johnson has a 58-45 career record and 3.40 ERA over parts of nine big league seasons, all but one of those years with the Marlins.

Donated Milwaukee Bucks coach Jason Kidd has donated more than $1 million for a men’s basketball scholarship with his former California program. The 10-time NBA All-Star led the Golden Bears to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances during his two seasons as a player. He opted to stay home in the Bay Area to play his college basketball in Berkeley.

Died Former college football player Tom Nickoloff, a receiver who played on Southern California’s 10-1 team that beat Wisconsin in the 1953 Rose Bowl, died. He was 84. He died on Oct. 23 of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
