Around the nation: Navy gets rare win vs Irish

Will Worth ran for 175 yards and two touchdowns, his ninth consecutive game with a rushing score, and Navy beat Notre Dame 28-27 in Jacksonville, Florida, in the nation’s longest-running intersectional rivalry.

It was a rare victory in the series for the Midshipmen (6-2), who beat the Irish for just the fourth time since 1963. Notre Dame (3-6) had won five in a row against Navy.

Irish coach Brian Kelly deserved some of the blame for this one. Trailing 28-24 with a little more than 7 minutes to go, Kelly opted for a 31-yard field goal instead of trying to convert a fourth-and-4 play at the 14. He made the call even though his defense hadn’t forced a punt all afternoon.

Navy got the ball back and ran out the clock with its option offense. Worth converted two huge fourth-down plays on the final drive, one on a dive play near midfield and another with a pass to Jamir Tillman that essentially ended the game.

Navy actually punted once, but it was wiped out after a replay because Notre Dame had 12 men on the field. Instead of punting, the Midshipmen kept the drive alive and capped it with Worth’s second rushing TD and his 15th of the season.

DeShone Kizer threw three touchdown passes for Notre Dame, which now needs to win out against Army, Virginia Tech and USC to become bowl eligible.

Air Force 31, Army 12: Arion Worthman passed for 195 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 63 yards and another score, and Air Force (6-3) beat Army (5-4) to win the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy at Michie Stadium in West Point, N.Y.

Texas 45, Texas Tech 37: D’Onta Foreman had career highs with three touchdowns and 341 yards, and Shane Buechele threw for two touchdowns to lead Texas (5-4, 3-3),over Texas Tech (4-5, 2-4), in Lubbock, Texas.

Miami 51, Pitt 28: Brad Kaaya passed for 356 yards and four touchdowns, and Miami (5-4, 2-3) snapped a four-game losing streak by beating Pittsburgh (5-4, 2-3) in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Minnesota 44, Purdue 31: Rodney Smith ran for 153 yards and three touchdowns and quarterback Mitch Leidner ran for 74 yards and two more scores as Minnesota (7-2, 4-2) defeated Purdue (3-6, 1-5), in Minneapolis.

Stanford 26, Oregon St. 15: Christian McCaffrey rushed for 199 yards and a touchdown, Bryce Love added a 56-yard touchdown run and host Stanford (6-3, 4-3) beat Oregon State(2-7, 1-5).

USC 45, Oregon 20: Ronald Jones tied a school single-game record with four rushing touchdowns and Southern California (6-3, 5-2) demolished Oregon (3-6, 1-5) in Los Angeles.

Georgia 27, Kentucky 24: Rodrigo Blankenship’s 25-yard field goal as time expired gave Georgia (5-4, 3-4) the victory over Kentucky (5-4, 4-3) in Lexington, Kentucky, ending the Bulldogs’ two-game losing streak.
