Uncle Bob: Electoral College did job
Uncle Bob (RE: For what it’s worth …”):
” I wonder if any of those so opposed to the electoral college (back when it looked like Trump was headed for defeat) have now changed their mind? Myself, I still believe that it serves the greater good for rural folks, in that it gives small population states like Idaho a say, however small, even when the outcome is not the one I had hoped for. Our 4 electoral votes carry more weight than our total direct votes would on an overall percentage basis. On a direct vote basis, the candidates would almost be compelled to ignore Idaho, Wyoming, etc., as the combined number of likely voters doesn’t even equal a couple of Burroughs in New York City, and it simply couldn’t be justifiable for the candidates to focus any significant resources in areas such as ours. The system, flawed as it must by design be, works. I hope that those of us disappointed in the results this time can be magnanimous, gracious, and supportive of President-Elect Trump, yet remain ever vigilant in safeguarding our inclusive heritage, just as I hope that those who are already gloating in smug, divisive, self-gratifying disdain for their fellow Americans come to recognize the benefit of a conciliatory tone. Of the latter, I am not at all optimistic from what I see today.”
