NFL notes: Chiefs’ Justin Houston hopes to play Sunday at Carolina

By Dave Skretta Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston says he hopes to make his season debut Sunday at Carolina, though the decision to put the four-time Pro Bowl pass rusher on the field ultimately rests with coach Andy Reid.

Houston was hobbled by his knee the second half of last season, and tweaked it in a playoff win over the Texans. He barely played in a playoff loss to the Patriots and had surgery in February.

The Chiefs have been hoping all along to have him for the stretch run.

He began practicing a few weeks ago, and was removed from the physically unable to perform list on Wednesday. And in his first comments since surgery, Houston said Thursday that he’s ready to “dominate.”

Redskins WR Jackson misses practice with shoulder injury

ASHBURN, Va. – Washington Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson missed a second consecutive day of practice because of a left shoulder injury, and his status for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings is uncertain.

Coach Jay Gruden says an MRI on Jackson’s left shoulder showed some rotator cuff “issues.” Jackson has been listed as dealing with a shoulder injury since Oct. 19.

Jackson started all eight games so far this season and has 30 catches for 416 yards and a touchdown. He left the Oct. 30 game against the Bengals in London to be evaluated for a concussion and in previous weeks had knee, ankle and hamstring injuries.

The 29-year-old was also limited to nine games in 2015 because of a hamstring injury.

Dolphins DT Mitchell activated; Landry, Stills miss practice

DAVIE, Fla. – Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Earl Mitchell, sidelined since Week 1 because of a calf injury, has been activated from injured reserve.

Mitchell, who has 33 career starts, is expected to play Sunday at San Diego.

Receivers Jarvis Landry (shoulder) and Kenny Stills (calf) joined the injury report Thursday and missed practice, and their status is day to day. The injuries could mean increased roles against the Chargers for rookies Jakeem Grant and Leonte Carroo.
