If you think post-election sour grapes are a modern invention, consider the remarks of Mrs. Belle Schusler, president of Spokane’s Woman’s Republican Club, as she denounced the plans for local Democrats to celebrate the election of Democrat Woodrow Wilson with a parade and float.
“The very idea of representing only the states of the country which voted for Wilson makes my blood boil,” said Mrs. Schusler. “… Why are they not going to represent the 10 states which voted for (Republican) Hughes? Is Wobbling Woodrow going to be president to the United States or president of the 29 states which voted for him and not of the rest? There are lots of soldiers in Spokane who won’t stand for this. Also, they are going to represent the West and the South in a mock marriage, leaving out the East. The whole plan is atrocious. I think it ought to be stopped.”
From the election prognostication beat: The Spokane Daily Chronicle bragged that its “pre-election test” – a poll of readers – correctly predicted eight out of the 10 races. The poll showed Wilson winning, along with the victorious Sen. Miles Poindexter. However, it incorrectly showed incumbent Ernest Lister losing the state gubernatorial race.
